Addict turned Ivy League Lawyer Defends Falsely Accused Man
Sarah Gad, once a drug addict and inmate, has become a successful lawyer, using her experiences to help others navigate the legal system.
Gad battled opioid addiction after a car accident and had multiple felony drug convictions before being invited to work at Kathleen Zellner's law firm, which inspired her to pursue a legal career. Kathleen Zellner, famous for her work on "Making a Murderer," stood by Gad and encouraged her to join her law firm
Facing potential prison time, Gad was given a chance and entered law school with an ankle monitor She attended the University of Chicago Law School, paid for through a settlement she received from Cook County.
Gad recently won her first murder case, successfully convincing the judge that her client, Ben Richardson, was innocent and getting the charges dropped.
Despite facing skepticism from Hennepin County Judge Barnett, Gad graduated in 2020 and became a licensed attorney in August 2022. Gad has handled 21 cases in a year, all of which have been resolved without going to trial.
Kathleen Zellner praises Gad's transformation, stating she saw her potential and tried to guide her toward making a positive impact on society: "All she needed was a second chance."
